Our Son is One (almost)

11 months have gone by since the day we held baby Malakai in our arms for the first time! I will never forget looking in his eyes and thinking that at that exact moment my world was changed.  Nothing prepares you for having a child, I do not care who you are, you can read all the books you want, listen to all the advice you can handle, and play with as many babies as you can get your hands on... but when it comes down to it, it's a whole new world! And a good world at that- but challenging at times.  We have been nothing but blessed with this angel of God.  Watching him grow is so fun! Like all parents tell you, "The time really flies".

I just started a class at my church this week called "Navigating Motherhood".  It focuses on young mother's with newborns-kindergarten.  Today the speaker talked about using each day as an opportunity to teach our children.  This really spoke to me because there are days that I am tired, worn out and just unenthusiastic about trying new things with Kai.  I want to use my time to better my son in any way I can! Sometimes I don't even realize what he is capable of.  For example, the latest and greatest thing in The Riley's Household this week:  My girlfriend came over to the house last weekend and was showing Kai how to hold up "1" with his finger, to show that he was turning one.  I honestly inside was thinking, that's way to advanced for him, I don't think he understands that yet.  Sure enough, after repeating it about 10 times, he started doing it!  I was a beaming Mama, but also felt guilty that I didn't teach him myself or try to challenge him to do new things.  So that is my goal for now... stretching my boy to discover his world!

Besides being a total smarty, Kai is walking a little but prefers to crawl because he can get from point A to point B faster.  He uses his words a lot and loves to say, Mama, Dada, Baba, Ball, Bird, Num, and (his new favorite) Bye-Bye.  Can you tell he likes B's? :) I'm pretty sure we have a talker on our hands! (wonder who he gets that from?!?!)  We are looking forward to his 1st Birthday Party which is going to be a pumpkin patch theme for our little October Pumpkin Head. We'll be posting pics of that later, it's going to be a pretty great time!

For now, we are going to enjoy the last couple weeks of having a child under one.  We know we have a LOT to look forward to......................................................................
